I occasionally have to remind myself that Graeme Revell has written some good scores; The Saint, Red Planet and The Chronicles of Riddick are all fine entertainments with some decent tunes and engaging synth and orchestral mixtures. However, these better efforts appear at judiciously spaced intervals, one wonders whether he saves himself for a memorable effort and everything else is just to pay the bills. By my reckoning, we should get another good Revell score in 2007. Until then, we must be content with Aeon Flux which is essentially a series of drum loops, with the occasional orchestral interjection, mostly strings for the mildly dramatic stuff (The Kiss, The Relical and Keeper etc.) and a little piano here and there, notably the chilly Cloning Discovery.
In fairness to Revell, he seems to have been dropped into the production late in the day (similar to what happened with Tomb Raider, although the results here are somewhat better) and if all they wanted was an energetic, electronic and percussive background to propel the film along, the composer can hardly be criticised for following orders. Based on her liner note, director Karyn Kusama was obviously happy with what she got, even if it suggests her musical ambitions for the film weren't very high. If you can't get enough of The Island, Aeon Flux is more of the same, albeit with just a touch more variety. Similarly, if you're after pictures of Charlize Theron wearing outfits that leave little to the imagination, it's not a bad place to start.
