However, this is James Horner and he is not one to ignore good material from an original and so much of the music from the original returns, or so I am told. It is for the most part a quiet and gentle score, making it the ideal music to relax to. Don't relax too much though, as there are some great big-band jazz tracks. Taking Bernie to the Beach and Basketball Swing are the tow longest portions. They are set very much in the Glenn Miller mould and I wouldn't be too surprised if there are a couple of almost direct lifts from Miller's music. The jazz also has the strange distinction of sounding a little like the theme to Victoria Wood's program on BBC television, which comes as a bit of a surprise. Anyway, for someone who really doesn't like jazz on the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this score although perhaps the softer moments did seem to drag at times. The final track is the only non-jazz more moving track and is great fun although there are some horribly obvious direct lifts from Star Trek II and the like. The Ascension is a beautiful cue that swells, before becoming soft and with a little jazz to cap it off, ends a good example of a quiet James Horner score, albeit it not quite as good as the original and certainly it lacks some of the variety of its predecessor.
