This is a pretty fun score and evokes the spirit of being in the jungle and so on quite well. Trying to imagine Sean Connery swinging through the trees to this music is not too heard. The only thing I find is that some of the groovy guitar parts sound more like they are from the Caribbean than from the jungle. However, that doesn't matter too much as they are fun to listen to and it's sort of the same part of the world isn't it?! The rest mixes orchestra and some fairly decent synth noises in the usual splendid Goldsmith way. Some sound like dripping or running water and so are perfect for the subject matter really and do add a lot to the effect. The main, fairly sweeping and lyrical theme does tend to sound like Star Trek V sometimes and does indeed seem to be derived from it. However, the orchestration is very different most of the time and so the similarity is only glancing. James Horner could learn a thing from Goldsmith about more effectively re-using material in the sense of not making it sound the same from score to score. Certainly a score worth getting if you like Goldsmith and if not, still give it a go, you might like it! It's definitely one of those scores you wouldn't think about buying unless you knew it was by Jerry Goldsmith and therefore going to be good.
