The Star Trek series of films didn't get off to a flying start in terms of the actual films, but musically they started better than they could have hoped for. Goldsmith's score is probably one of the things that holds the film together, especially in the many long special effects sequences. The highlight of the score is The Enterprise - Track 4, this starts of quietly and follows as Kirk and Scotty look over the new Enterprise in Space Dock. It uses the main theme in a variety of ways depicting the immense size of the new ship. The rest of the score mostly concerns the Enterprise's flying in and around V'Ger the alien ship that the film revolves around. An impressive use of synth effects helps to conjure up the great vastness of V'Ger and the excellent integration of these effects into a large orchestra is wondrous to behold and gives the score some of its most memorable moments.
